Kenya Whitewater Rafting Safaris
Whitewater Rafting in Kenya
Tana River
.: Departs from the Norfolk Hotel at 0800 hrs.
It is an hour and a half drive to our campsite
near Sagana. The clients are offered tea or
coffee with biscuits when they arrive. After the
refreshments the clients are given a safety
briefing then they are transported up the river
to the put in point. They are provided with life
jackets, helmets and a paddle.
The trip will take from four to five hours
depending on the water levels. Note we may put
in at a different points depending again on
water levels. Below is a brief description on
the full rafting trip.
“ The Tana River is a drop pool river offering
and exciting day of white water rafting. The
adventure starts with a 3 km stretch of easy
class II and III white water, where there is
plenty of opportunity to practice the paddle
skills required to run the lower part of the
river. A 6 km section follows with an hour or so
of relaxation to view the abundance of bird life
around. Cool off with a swim in the warm water.
The final 7 km of river, back to the campsite
starts with some easy class III waters where
paddle commands are gone over again. It is now
time for the 3 big rapids (class IV and V) with
names like Captains Folly, Can of Worms, taking
its name from its four 90 degree bends in
succession) and Sphincter Flexor. Subject to
water levels we may be able to do some surfing
in “fish eye” and then swim the next couple of
smaller rapids. Numerous smaller rapids brings
one on to the last big one – Spasm, a series of
drops over ¾ km with a big surprise half way
through. We reach the take out point/campsite
about 4 to 5 hours after setting off, where a
full barbeque lunch awaits us. Plenty of beer
and soft drink included.”
What to Wear:-
Clothes you do not mind getting wet i.e. T
Shirts, shorts or long sleeved shirt and
trousers (especially for those who burn easily)
and shoes that will not come off.
Athi River (Mid April to Mid July, Mid November
to early January)
3 to 4 Days Athi River
The section of the Athi River that we run
borders Tsavo National Park to the east.
In many ways, this river is unique. Wonderful
scenery, a multitude of wild-life, hugely varied
and spectacular bird-life, coupled with the best
of medium grade white water river, makes for a
truly unforgettable experience.
Of the wild-life, bushbuck, giraffe, buffalo and
elephant are among the most common animals seen.
Crocodiles are a certainty, as are monkeys and
baboons. The bird life along the river is of
course spectacular and to date our guides have
recorded over 120 different species.
Day 1
Pick up by SWS in Nairobi and driven down to the
start of the rafting venue near Yatta Gap Bridge
(4hrs). Put in at the bridge, afternoon float
trip for 10km down the river (4hrs). Mainly calm
water. The night is spent on a suitable sand
bank along the river.
Day 2
Early start, so as to be on the river for the
best of the game viewing, (early morning and
evening is when the animals mainly come down to
drink); full day rafting, with numerous sections
of class II and III white water plus two big
drops of class IV. Lunch on one of the many
small islands, (30km) Arrive at camp – again a
suitable sand bank, late afternoon.
Day 3
Very similar to day 2, but with some more
exciting rapids and “jungle” to pass through.
(25km). Optional overnight or depart to Nairobi.
Mathioya River
With over 450m of descent in around 22km the
Mathoya River offers some of the most technical
water to be found in Kenya. A narrow, low volume
river with rapids up to grade V. Previous
experience is recommended.
For inexperienced rafters a two-day package is
available; one day rafting on the Tana,
overnight at our camp, then have a second action
packed day on the Mathoya.

KAYAKING - OVERVIEW
Kenya has a wealth of kayaking and river sport
available. Paddlers in Kenya benefit from all
types of river at every grade, with vast amounts
of uncharted water to explore with the added
advantage of year round warm water. Water levels
throughout the year vary but typically peak
during the long rains (Mid/late April to June)
and short rains (Nov to January).
With the lowering of off-season airfares; Kenya
is now a viable alternative to other mainstream
kayaking destinations. Cheap food & drink,
accommodation and visa’s along with other off
river activities such as rock climbing,
mountaineering (Mt's Kenya & Kilimanjaro) off
shore sailing, diving, game safari’s and much
more make Kenya a kayakers must visit
destination!
